Post-16 Football and Education Academies

CACT Post-16 Football Programme
Charlton Athletic Community Trust’s (CACT) Post-16 Football and Education Academies are aimed at boys and girls aged 16-19 who are interested in combining school work with the life of a professional footballer.

The football academies are a two-year, full-time education and football development programme, delivered in partnership with professional and non-league football clubs. Open to keen footballers, CACT’s Post-16 programme is a must for any football enthusiast and aspiring player.

A playing assessment is held to determine the football level for prospective students. Both the football and educational element of the academy are fully funded, with a subsidised cost for purchasing training kit.

The programme offers pathways to higher levels of football and links to clubs across the football pyramid, while providing Post-16 education in a range of subject areas - making CACT’s Post-16 programme a truly comprehensive educational football package.

Applicants must be aged 16-18 at the start of the academic year in September and hold a British passport or have legal residency status in the UK.

When does the programme start?

The course starts in line with the academic year in September. However, a pre-season training programme commences in late June to prepare players physically and mentally for the season ahead.

What are the requirements to join the programme?

Players should have a keen interest in football and sports, experience of playing in a team environment and commitment to learning and developing football skills whilst gaining a sports qualification.

How often do players train?

There are three training sessions per week, totalling to around six hours training time per week.

When are matches played?

Matches are played on Wednesdays. Selected players will play either at home or away, depending on where a fixture is scheduled to take place. For away games, players will travel locally or further afield by minibus or by public transport if the location is within a short radius of the home ground.

When will players receive their training kit?

Training kit will be issued during pre-season once payment has been received.

How much does the training kit cost?

The cost of the training kit is to be confirmed (TBC).

Is match kit provided?

Yes. Match kit is supplied on game days and collected post-match, then cleaned in readiness for the next fixtures.

Which leagues do CACT Post-16 teams compete in?

CACT Post-16 teams participate in a variety of competitive leagues, including regional professional club foundation leagues, semi-professional academy leagues and local college competitions. Players will be placed into either the Development or Performance squad, and this placement will determine the league in which they compete.

When will players find out which squad they’re in?

Squad placements will be finalised and communicated at the end of the summer training programme, just before the start of the new season.
